Home Fire Prevention Checklist
You can prevent the most common home fires with this checklist.
Electrical Fires
- Inspect outlets for loose wiring (monthly)
- DO NOT daisy chain extension cords or power strips
- Unplug cords when not in use
- Ensure light bulbs are the appropriate wattage
Cooking Fires
- Install automatic stove shut-off devices (like FireAvert)
- Teach children about safe cooking practices
- Deep clean your range hood (annually)
- Move paper towels and cloth towels to at least 3 feet from the stove
- Avoid cooking on high when possible
- Never leave the kitchen while cooking
Heating Equipment
- Keep a 3-foot clearance around space heaters
- Don’t use extension cords with space heaters
- Don’t leave space heaters unattended
- Inspect furnace filters (bi-annually)
Smoking Hazards
- Don’t smoke inside your home
Emergency Prep
- Create a evacuation and emergency plan
- Test smoke alarms (monthly)
- Install smoke alarms in every bedroom and one outside sleeping areas
- Teach family members on fire extinguisher use
