How it Works - Details
Simply, the device is a smart plug that listens for the smoke alarm.
It checks to see if the stove is on by measuring how much current the stove is pulling from the outlet. The microphone in the device listens only for the specific noise of a smoke detector. Loud noises, music, screams, etc... will not be identified by the microphone.
If a smoke detector in the unit is sounding, and the stove is on, the device will cut power to the stove. This prevents forgotten cooking (the #1 cause of apartment fires) from starting a fire. There is a short delay of ~30sec to prevent false alarms. Normal cooking smoke can be waved away in this time to prevent false alarms from triggering the device.
